Match Report: A valiant effort from Sydney FC was turned down by Brisbane Roar in a 1-0 loss in the second match of the Liberty A-League Women’s season at Ballymore Stadium.
A goal off the left boot by Chelsea Blissett in the 22nd minute gave Brisbane a leg up against the Sky Blues.
Despite Brisbane’s early dominance, the Sky Blues pressed in the second half for the equaliser and with Charlotte McLean and Cortnee Vine going close.
McLean hit two long range efforts which tested the keeper Silkowitz while Vine had an attempt saved from just outside of the box.
Sydney FC substitute striker Aideen Keane was caught in the cross hairs of two Brisbane defenders and appealed for a penalty midway through the second half. She went down just outside the six-yard box, but the penalty appeal was denied.
Cortnee Vine and goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz were at it again in the 73rd minute. Spreading her Matilda magic, Vine opted for a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. It was saved by Silkowitz to keep Brisbane ahead.
In the end, the Sky Blues fell short in a 1-0 matchup and their next clash will be when they head overseas for the AFC International Women’s Club Championship.
