Our women’s team are set to make history as they play the first Liberty A-League Women’s match at the brand new Allianz Stadium. Coming off the back of two impressive victories against Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers, they will be looking to make it three on the spin when Brisbane Roar make the trip to New South Wales on Saturday afternoon.
After a disappointing start against Adelaide United with a number of key players absent, Ante Juric’s side showed they meant business this season when they swept aside Melbourne Victory at Cromer Park and followed that up with a 1-0 victory at rivals Western Sydney Wanderers where they played with ten for more than 45 minutes.
At half time, Ante Juric told his team that they were going to win despite the numerical disadvantage and it was the Remy Siemsen stunner that settled the afternoon and won the derby for the girls in sky blue.
There is fierce competition for places across the park with American import Madison Haley keeping Northern Beaches’ Remy Siemsen out of a starting spot and Kirsty Fenton keeping Kiwi International Anna Green out of the left back spot. Not to mention the big impact that Shay Hollman has been having in midfield despite only starting her second professional match last weekend. Ante Juric has a wealth of talent at his disposal and it will be key to manage the squad with the extended A-League Women’s season.
Coming into this clash, there are no injury concerns for the Sky Blues with the only exception being the long-term absence of Taylor Ray, still recovering from her ACL injury. On a big field, and a great surface like Allianz Stadium, Sydney FC should be expecting to dominate the contest, and have the lion share of possession.
For the Queensland outfit, they have started the season performing well, but have failed to see that convert to points on the table. They began with a 2-1 victory against Newcastle Jets but stumbled at home to Canberra, and Melbourne City proved too strong for the Roar, as they lost 3-0. In their ranks they have plenty of talent with the likes of Matildas Larissa Crummer, and American Hensley Hancuff so will always pose a danger and be difficult to beat.
Head Coach Garrath McPherson enjoys to play on the counter attack which has worked for his girls in recent times at home, but knows that he will need to be at his best if he wants to get a result from this match.
These two sides have met 27 times with the wins sitting even on 11 a piece, with five draws shared between them. Brisbane Roar were a force in the early days of the W-League, but Sydney FC are now the team to beat and have won 4 of the last six meetings, scoring 13 goals in the process. In the most recent match up, an early goal from Maria Rojas and a Charlie Rule 2nd half addition was enough for the Sky Blues to run out 2-0 winners and Sydney FC will be looking to do the same on Saturday afternoon.
