Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold said he’d wait until the last moment to decide whether new signing David Carney will start against Adelaide United on Friday night at Coopers Stadium (kick off 7:40pm).
Arnold praised the versatility of his latest acquisition as he stressed the need for improvement in the final third in front of goal.
“We’ll see how he [Carney] goes today,” Arnold said.
“He was very good at training yesterday and he fitted perfectly in to what we wanted.
“David obviously comes with great experience and it’s something that I wanted, an extra player in the ACL for that experience with the young boys out wide.
“David brings versatility, he can play at number 11, number 10, number 7, and after losing Alex Gersbach he can also play at left back where he played with me in the national team at times.
“It’s no secret last week we had more chances than Brisbane,” he continued.
“Whether it’s the final decision in the final third, whether it’s the lack of finishing, that’s what we need to improve on.
“If you watch the other games it’s the quality of the individual sometimes that puts the ball in the back of the net, it’s not the team build up or the team structure that does it and that’s what we’re working on every day with the younger boys.
“Brosquey is only a week away and we look forward to getting him back too.”
With 10 games remaining in the regular season, Arnold said it was important to be close to the teams about Sydney FC on the table as he said he’s addressed the errors from Saturday’s match against Brisbane Roar.
“[There was] a lack of discipline behind the ball, they got us on the counter attack and we’ve had a look at that this week and our balance behind the ball,” Arnold said.
“The most important thing is we’re close and the results keep going different ways.
“We had a hiccup on the weekend that we weren’t happy with against Brisbane, we’ve had a look at that, but at the end of the day there’s still 10 games to go, 30 points available and we’ve got to stay close to the top.”
