FEBRUARY:

Matchweek 7

Sydney FC 2 vs Wellington Phoenix 1

HIGHLIGHTS

Kicking off February, it was the Wellington Phoenix who started in rapid fashion forcing goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne into a number of crucial saves.

The Sky Blues then settled into the contest and a beautiful ball from Alex Baumjohann released Kosta Barbarouses on the right, with the Kiwi finishing on an acute angle to give Sydney FC the lead.

An early scare to start the second half, as Wellington rattled the crossbar, spurred the Sky Blues on and a mirror move from the first half saw Babarouses bring down Jordi Swibel’s head on to fire home from the edge of the box.

A consolation goal to Davila in stoppage time narrowed the result but it was Sydney FC wrapping up a solid victory to move into third place.

It would prove to be a frustrating evening at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, as Roar shotstopper Jamie Young starred to ensure the points were shared.

Matchweek 9

Melbourne City 3 vs Sydney FC 2

HIGHLIGHTS

The first domestic away trip for the Sky Blues in nearly a year ended in a narrow defeat against eventual Champions Melbourne City.

City were two goals up inside 30 minutes before the Sky Blues pushed back as Kosta Barbarouses smashed the crossbar before the break.

An early second half goal to Jamie Maclaren had the home side set up for a big win, but a spirited comeback from the Sky Blues saw Milos Ninkovic and Patrick Wood score in a late flurry before a strong Sydney FC penalty shout in stoppage time was turned away.

Matchweek 10

Sydney FC 0 vs Macarthur FC 1

HIGHLIGHTS

A 10-man Sky Blues proved unlucky in defeat against Macarthur FC in Netstrata Jubilee Stadium to close out the month.

Seeing several big chances spurned inside the opening half hour, Matt Derbyshire put the Bulls ahead with a tap in before Paulo Retre was shown his marching orders after his high foot challenged was deemed serious foul play.

Despite creating more chances in the second half, Macarthur were able to see out the match and claim their first victory over the Sky Blues.
