STH: Discovery Phase Role of Coaches

At Sydney FC, we believe the role of the discovery phase coach is to facilitate a fun learning environment to develop a child’s passion for the game.

There should be less “coaching” during the Discovery Phase, but more facilitating a child’s development through fun exercises that incorporate hidden learning of the fundamental skills.

The emphasis is always on building a love for football, allowing a player to discover the game at his or her own pace. Training exercises should be built around always having a ball involved, where a player gets many touches on the football in each and every session.
