Sydney FC youngster Remy Siemsen has her sights firmly set on World Cup qualification as she jets out to China with the Young Matildas for the upcoming AFC U19 Women’s Championship this month.

The young Sky Blue and NAB Young Footballer of the Year for 2016/17 said she was relieved to make the final squad for the tournament as she talked up the chances of the Young Matildas at the competition and beyond.

“It was a huge honour to make the squad,” Siemsen said.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the competition and it was a big relief to see my name on the final squad list because there were so many good girls that I thought it was going to be hard to make the team.

“I’m just really excited for the tour and tournament and I really think this team can qualify so that’s exciting.

[Head Coach Gary van Egmond] has said he wants us to not only qualify but win the tournament as well and I think that we definitely have a good chance of doing that.”

The 17 year old striker said the tournament would prove great preparation as he gets set to enter her second season in the Westfield W-League following a stellar breakout 2016/17 season with the Sky Blues.

“This will be great preparation for the W-League season coming up,” she said.

“I know last year [playing with the Young Matildas] definitely helped me before heading into the W-League season.

“I know the quality that we will be playing [in the tournament] will be just as good if not better than the W-League with the speed and pace of the game and I know it’ll be some of the best preparation before heading into the W-League season.

“For myself I just want to get a few goals, even just one will make me happy, because the quality of the teams we’re playing are very hard,” she continued

“To get a goal or two is something I’m aiming for and of course to qualify is all I’m hoping for.”

Sydney FC kick off their Westfield W-League 2017/18 season at home at Allianz Stadium against Brisbane Roar in a W-League Hyundai A-League double header (kick off 5:20pm).
