Women receive Civic reception from Inner West Council

Sydney FC’s Liberty A-League Championship win has been celebrated with a civic reception hosted by the Inner West Council at Leichhardt Oval.

During the 2023/24 season, the Sky Blues broke numerous attendance records at the stadium often named the Eighth Wonder of the World – including a huge crowd of more than 7,000 supporters in the Semi Final clash with Central Coast Mariners.

Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne spoke at the reception and praised the efforts of the Liberty A-League back-to-back Champions, who inspired many supporters and children this season with their performances at home.

“I have come to quite a few matches here [Leichhardt Oval] with my young daughter and when I told her that I was coming to this event today she begged me to bring her along so she could meet these players and get signatures from the team,” Darcy Byrne said.

“What this side have done for Women’s football is phenomenal and I really want to thank them and congratulate them for their efforts.”

Sydney FC CEO Mark Aubrey also spoke about his pride in being the best in the country both on and off the pitch.

“We have set the standard this season for women’s football and while we are happy with that, we want to improve and we still have a long way to go.

Princess Ibini also spoke at the reception and said how much she enjoyed playing her football at Leichhardt Oval.

“I would like to thank all involved with our matches at Leichhardt Oval as all of our girls have really enjoyed playing here and performing in front of a great crowd,” she said.
