More About Academy Graduate Will Kennedy

Sydney FC officially announced the signing of 19-year-old Will Kennedy on a three year professional contract last week.

As the young footballer begins his journey with the Sky Blues we decided to lift the lid a little on his path so far.

A Homegrown Talent

Born and raised in Sydney’s northern suburbs of Balgowlah and Mosman, Kennedy has been a part of the Sky Blues’ setup since he was just 12 years old. After a brief stint with Manly United, he joined Sydney FC’s academy in 2018. From there, he progressed through the ranks, earning his place in the first team after years of hard work and dedication.

Reflecting on his journey, Kennedy said, “In my head, I always knew I’d make it, but coming through the academy is tough. It’s such a long journey. When I joined the first team every training session felt like a trial, especially in the last four months when I was training without being on a contract. When I finally signed, it was a massive relief and an amazing feeling.”

Will has come through the Sydney FC Academy like many others.

The Versatile Defender

While Kennedy initially made his mark as a holding midfielder, his adaptability has seen him transition to playing as a fullback, a position where he’s comfortable on either side of the pitch. “I’m mainly left-footed, but honestly, it depends on the day,” he said. “Some of my qualities align with what the boss needs at fullback. I’m aggressive, and I try to win everything. A lot of what I learned as a holding midfielder has carried over to playing in this position.”

Kennedy has already had a taste of first-team action, making two appearances in the AFC Champions League 2. “I played a couple of minutes against Hiroshima in Sydney and 45 minutes against Eastern in Hong Kong. It was an incredible experience, even though my hips were giving me trouble after that trip,” he shared.

Challenges and Resilience

Kennedy’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Currently recovering from a stress reaction and bone bruising in his pelvis and hip area, he’s eager to return to full fitness. “I’ve been out for about four weeks now, but hopefully I’ll be back in another three to four weeks,” he said. “Right now, my focus is on staying fit and getting consistent game time.”

Despite the setbacks, Kennedy remains optimistic and determined. His short-term goal is to establish himself in the Sydney FC first team, while his long-term ambition is to make a name for himself on the international stage. “I want to make my mark in Australia first and then see where it goes from there,” he said.

Inspired by Role Models

Kennedy draws inspiration from both his family and football idols. “My dad has been my biggest influence. Even though he’s not a football guy—he’s more into AFL and rugby—he’s supported me every step of the way. He’s always there to help me, especially during tough times,” he said.

On the field, Kennedy looks up to players like Manchester City’s Rodri. “He’s the best midfielder in the Premier League right now, in my opinion. I love how he throws himself around and tries to win everything. That’s a bit of me,” Kennedy added.

A Bright Future

A lifelong Chelsea fan, Kennedy’s heart belongs to Sydney FC. “Being part of this club means everything to me. I’ve been here since I was 12, and it doesn’t get much better than this,” he said.

What The Coaches Said: Kelly Cross – Technical Director – Youth

“Will’s story is one of perseverance. He’s stayed on the path even when others his age might have moved on or gotten opportunities elsewhere. I’ve always believed in him.

“What sets Will apart is his competitiveness. He’s an absolute winner, someone who takes no prisoners on the field. He reminds me of Roy Keane in many ways—a player you hate to face but love to have on your team.

“Recently, he’s transitioned from a ball-winning midfielder to a left-back, and it’s like he’s been in that role for years. It’s a sign of his adaptability and football intelligence. He’s a role model for younger players and a credit to the club. I’m thrilled he’s earned this opportunity.”

As Kennedy prepares for the next chapter of his career, Sydney FC fans have much to look forward to from this rising star. With his versatility, determination, and passion for the game, he’s poised to make a significant impact.
