Wilkinson To Head Home From Vietnam

Sydney FC Captain Alex Wilkinson will return home from the Sky Blues’ AFC Champions League Group H campaign in Vietnam to receive treatment on an injured left foot.

Wilkinson sustained the injury in Sydney FC’s first group match against Yokohama F. Marinos last Friday night and will come back to the Sky Blues’ Macquarie Park base in a bid to be fit for the crucial remaining two games of the Isuzu Ute A-League season.

The Socceroos defender will have a scan on the foot when he returns to assess the extent of the injury.

Head Coach Steve Corica said: “Wilko was injured in the game against the Japanese and won’t play again in this tournament so we’ll send him home to get scans and see what happens from there.

“It’s a possible fracture but we will wait and see what the scan results say and we’ll try and get him right for the last two games of the season if the scans go well.”

Sydney FC’s match against Yokohama F. Marinos last night was the team’s 10th match in one month following a long and disrupted Isuzu Ute A-League season.

“It’s undoubtedly been tough conditions for us playing in the heat and every three days,” continued the Head Coach.

“We’ve a number of players suffering from gastro at the minute but we know if we win our remaining two games we can still finish second.

“We’ve played well against both Jeonbuk and Hoang and probably should have won both games against them so we will be confident going into the matches.”

Rhyan Grant captained the side last night however is one of the players who has succumbed to a stomach bug and could miss Thursday night’s clash with Jeonbuk.

The Sky Blues will finish second providing they win their last two games and Yokohama F. Marinos defeat Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the final round.

Young midfielder Corey Hollman will also return home tomorrow with Wilkinson having suffered a groin issue.
