Who Is Nickolas Alfaro – Our New Academy Graduate

Sydney FC welcomed another rising star to its first team last month, with 16-year-old Nickolas Alfaro signing his first professional A-League contract.

The three-year deal marks a significant milestone for Alfaro, a player who has dedicated much of his young life to football and has grown through the ranks of Sydney FC’s esteemed Academy.

Alfaro’s journey to this achievement began at the age of 11 when he joined the Academy under the guidance of Kelly Cross. Originally from Schofields, Alfaro was recruited from Football Tech Academy in Blackett after showing early promise as a talented midfielder. His first steps with Sydney FC involved training with the Under-13s. While initially a train-on player, Cross decided to hold Alfaro back a year to focus on his development, a decision that has clearly paid dividends.

“Nico has always possessed a special quality on the pitch,” says Cross. “With a Peruvian family background, he carries a touch of South American football in his game—something that stands out the moment you watch him play. He is incredibly comfortable on the ball and prefers to take risks and create opportunities rather than simply making a safe pass.”

Nickolas Alfaro made his debut for Sydney FC in the Australia Cup Round of 32.

Alfaro’s journey through the Academy has been steady and deliberate, with the midfielder rising through each age group before earning his first-team opportunity. Despite his youth, Alfaro’s confidence and skill have already caught the attention of fans and coaches alike. He describes himself as an on-the-ball midfielder who thrives on creating chances and working hard in the centre of the park.

“I like to get on the ball, turn forward, and create as many chances as I can,” Alfaro explains. “I’m all about being consistent and giving my best for the team.”

Cross echoes this sentiment, emphasizing what makes Alfaro a special player. “Nico is a player who makes things happen. One of his standout attributes is his ability to draw opponents in, allowing them to think they can win the ball, only to glide past them effortlessly. This skill is what sets special players apart, and it’s exactly the kind of quality we aim to develop in our program—players who can make a real difference, particularly in the attacking third.”

The inspiration behind Alfaro’s playing style can be traced back to his admiration for Brazilian legend Kaka. “I loved watching Kaka play. He was so creative in tight spaces and exciting to watch,” he says.

Closer to home, Alfaro finds motivation in Anthony Caceres, another Sydney FC midfielder. “Cass has been a big role model for me. Watching him play and learning from him has been amazing,” he adds.

Signing his first professional contract is a dream come true for Alfaro, who has been a fan of Sydney FC since he was a child. “It’s honestly a blessing,” he says with a smile. “To come through the Academy, wear the badge, and now sign my first contract—it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of.”

While the step up to the first team has been challenging, Alfaro is embracing the experience. “The intensity is much higher, and the physicality is a big jump from what I’ve done before. But the boys have been really supportive, and I’m learning every day,” he says.

Cross believes Alfaro’s work ethic and character will be key to his continued success. “To his credit, he has always worked hard, remained humble, and comes from a strong family background. He is a dedicated learner, both on and off the field, and has a sharp footballing mind. When taught something new, he picks it up immediately and applies it to his game.”

Looking ahead, Alfaro’s immediate goal is to earn minutes on the pitch and continue learning from his teammates and coaches. “I just want to make the most of this new experience, take everything I’ve learned, and show it on the field,” he says.

For fans eager to see what Alfaro brings to the team, he promises excitement. “I’ll work hard to be consistent and provide as much as I can. I want to bring a bit of a show every time I play,” he says.

Cross sees a bright future for the young midfielder. “Ultimately, Nico is on an exciting trajectory. If everyone involved in his development—from the academy to the first team—does their job right, we could have a truly special player emerging.”

Nickolas Alfaro’s story is a testament to Sydney FC’s commitment to nurturing talent through their Academy. With his hard work, dedication, and passion for the game, Alfaro is poised to make a lasting impact at the club he has loved since childhood.
