We Can Prove We’re Contenders This Weekend – Vedran

Sydney FC goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic says the Sky Blues want to prove they are title contenders this year against Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium on Saturday (kick off 7.30pm).

Current Champions and recent FFA Cup winners Victory are many peoples’ favourites for the title again this year having defeated Sydney FC 3-0 in last season’s end of season showpiece.

However Janjetovic believes that result will only spur Sydney FC on this Saturday.

“You want to forget the Grand Final loss as fast as you can, I think we’ve done that and we’ve shown we’ve got good character in the team but we want to go out a prove to them we can contend for the title this year as well,” he said.

“You definitely want to make amends for that [Grand Final defeat] next time you play them so it’s something we are looking forward to at the weekend.

“It’s going to be a great test, I mean they are holding all the silverware at the moment so they are obviously doing something right.

“We just have to stick to our game plan and hopefully make amends.”

Defender Jacques Faty is expecting a tough game but believes being top of the Hyundai A-League is something the team can draw confidence from.

“Yes it’s good for us [to be top of the ladder] and good for the club, for Sydney FC ,” said Faty. “Now we have to continue to improve and to play well.

“That’s why this game this weekend will be important for us.  Melbourne Victory are a good team, everybody knows that, but we are good too and it will be a good game.”

The Sky Blues are also the only remaining undefeated team in the competition while shot-stopper Janjetovic has the most clean sheets in the country so far with 3 from 5 games.

They are statistics he believes will force the club to keep their game at a premium.

“I think every team wants to end our run and I think every team that we play wants to beats us,” he said.

“There’s just something about Sydney FC everyone wants to beat us, I guess it just comes with the territory, so hopefully we can just keep the undefeated streak going,” said Janjetovic.

The match will be played for the 5th annual beyondblue Cup which Sydney FC currently hold following a 0-0 draw last season and a 3-2 win with ten men and goals from Garcia, Ryall and Del Piero in November 2013, the season before.
