Coming off the back of three victories and currently sitting in first place, Sydney FC’s long-standing defender Alesha Clifford sees the Sky Blues making it four in a row when the east coast capitals clash on Monday.
Having played in the Westfield W-League since its inception, Clifford is the first to admit Melbourne Victory will not be an easy feat.
“Each time we play Melbourne it’s really tough,” she said.
“They’ve got the likes of Lisa De Vanna among others and this season they’ve recruited some quality domestic and international players.
“As long as we turn up on the day though, the ball is in our court.”
The 23-year-old defender began her Westfield W-League career with Sydney FC and believes this season’s squad is the strongest one yet.
“In terms of team dynamic, this season’s squad is probably the best I’ve been amongst so far,” Clifford said.
“We have a young team but everyone is bonding really well on and off the field, and I think that carries through to how we play each week.”
Clifford is also hopeful their undefeated streak has set them up as strong contenders for the finals.
“There are teams winning and losing each week. To come out with such a strong start, it’s looking good for us this season, especially considering the comp is really tight this year,” she said.
“It’s still early days. Obviously our goal is to make semis and if we keep up the positive training and continue to win games, we can only hope for it.”
While making semis is her main priority this season, Clifford also wants to focus on her individual performance.
“My goal is to start every game and keep performing well week in, week out,” said Clifford.
Clifford says she has seen a remarkable change in support for the Westfield W-League over the years and this season’s fan base for Sydney FC is stronger than ever.
“The Cove comes along to matches so that’s awesome support. Each week we are getting more and more young girls come along to watch with their teams,” she said.
“There is more media interest and the word is getting out. On the weekend it was a record crowd so it seems to be growing each year.”
