Sydney FC’s PlayStation 4 NPL NSW 2 Men’s went down 2-0 against Mounties Wanderers in their first ever game in the state competition at Lambert Park, Leichhardt on Sunday.
While Sydney FC dominated the majority of the match and controlled most of the possession and time in the opposition half, they were caught out twice in transition to concede two goals in the first 45 minutes.
On the half hour mark Sydney had a set piece opportunity but the free kick was blocked and humped forward by the Mounties defence to their lone striker.
In a one on one tussle Sydney FC defender Nicola Kuleski lost his footing and the Mounties striker broke through on goal and shot over the advancing Duro Dragicevic to open the scoring.
Sydney tried to hit back but their final pass couldn’t find its mark with Mounties on the back foot.
In the 44th minute a turnover in midfield again gifted Mounties a goal as they pounced on the loose ball surged forward and lobbed Dragicevic for a 2-0 margin just before the break.
The second half saw Mounties Wanderers content to sit back in a 4-4-1-1 combination which made it difficult to break down despite the glut of possession enjoyed by the Sky Blues.
It was a frustrating night for the young Sydney FC side and with a very physical Mounties Wanderers happy to keep sending long balls up the other end of the field the breakthrough did not come.
The Sky Blues first grade side are next in action against 2015 Minor Premiers Spirit FC on Saturday, 12 March at Christie Park, Christie Road, Macquarie Park (kick off 7.00pm).
