Three Sky Blues named in Olyroos squad for WAFF U23 Tourament

Three Sydney FC players have been named in the Olyroos squad for the upcoming West Asian Football Federation U23 Tournament which will be held in Saudi Arabia during the international break.

Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Jake Girdwood-Reich and Corey Hollman are the current Sydney FC players selected along with many former Sydney FC Academy players such as Patrick Yazbek, Adrian Segecic and Jake Hollman.

The Championship – played out of Al Hofuf, Saudi Arabia from 18 to 26 March – will feature Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The Championship format sees the eight participating teams broken up into four groups, who will each play three matches throughout the window, with opponents beyond the first match dependent on results.

Ufuk Talay spoke about three of his players being selected and backs that they deserve this praise.

“They’ve worked hard with us and of course they deserve it [the call up].

“With national teams, it doesn’t matter which age group you play in, it’s always an honour and privilege to represent your country.

“It’s what you do in club space that earns you the opportunity to play for your national team and for us as a club we are very proud to send our players to represent their countries,” Talay concluded.

Corey will join his brother Jake in the squad

The Subway Olyroos have been drawn into Group D alongside Iraq and will then face either Egypt or UAE, before the match schedule opens up ahead of their final fixture.

It will be the last opportunity for the Subway Olyroos to assemble prior to Vidmar selecting his 23-man squad for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024™ in early-April.

The Subway Olyroos are one of 16 teams who have qualified for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024™, should they finish in the top three they will automatically qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics as the AFC representatives, while the fourth-best team will play an AFC-CAF play-off match for the final qualification spot.
