Three selected in Junior Matildas

CommBank Junior Matildas Head Coach Rae Dower has called up 28-players for the first training camp of 2024 as the U-17 Women’s National Team enters their final phase of preparations for May’s AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup™.

Three Sky Blues have been named in this squad, all from the newly created Female Development Squad which has been training since early December.

The Development Squad contains 37 girls aged 14-16 who still play their club football during the season, but train in a professional environment at Sydney FC.

Through this training, Mikayla Doung, Sofia Fante and Allyssa Ng Saad have all been named in the Junior Matildas Squad which is a five day camp that will run from 21 – 25 January 2024.

Speaking about the upcoming camp and player selections, Head Coach Dower said: “We’re excited to get back into camp and continue to build on a really successful 2023 both for us as a group and for women’s football in Australia.”

“The entire group of players and staff have had a well-earned rest after a busy 2023 and we’re eager to get back together and cement our goals and aspirations for the year ahead.”

With the A-League Women’s season commencing its second half, Dower has elected to continue leaving those signed players within their club environment while providing a new cohort of players further chances to demonstrate their quality.

“We want to ensure that players that we haven’t had in camp yet, or ones that we haven’t seen for several months, are given an opportunity to showcase their ongoing development and improvement,” said Dower.

“With so much depth across this age group, it’s important that we continue to look for ways to ensure that the players have every prospect to be successful and to mature into high potential players.

“By hosting this camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, it provides a great reminder of Australian sporting success and additional inspiration for the players to be surrounded by such history,” Dower concluded.

Running from 6 – 20 May 2024, Australia is still awaiting to hear its group’s fate for the continental youth championships that will see the top three nations qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Dominican Republic 2024™.
