Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay has urged his side to stay locked in on their own standards as they prepare for a blockbuster Big Blue clash with Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium this Saturday night.
With the race for the top tightening and the Cove celebrating 20 years of passionate support, Talay is expecting a special atmosphere — and demanding a performance to match.
Focus First, Atmosphere Second
“I think the focus is what we do first and foremost,” Talay said.
“We’re playing at home and we’re hoping we get a massive crowd. It’s the Cove’s 20th year celebrating and supporting this massive club, so we’re hoping it’s a great atmosphere.”
A foundation player at Sydney FC, Talay knows exactly what the occasion means.
“I was here from day one at the club. To do it as a coach on the other side of the fence would be an unbelievable feeling personally. The support has been immense from day one — even when we’ve had bad games, they continue to back us.”

Learning From the Past Meetings
Sydney claimed a strong home win in the first meeting between the sides this season but suffered a disappointing defeat away.
“We had a good first game against them at home and a poor performance away,” Talay admitted. “We know what they’re good at.”
Victory’s threat in transition will be a key concern, particularly the influence of creative midfielder Juan Mata, who Talay highlighted as one of their most dangerous weapons.
“He’s having a great season and is leading the assists in the competition. He’s definitely one player we need to stop.
“They’ve got quick wingers, they defend in a mid-block and they’re very good in transition. They’ve also been dangerous from set pieces and scored a few goals that way.”
For Talay, the blueprint is simple: nullify their strengths and stay compact without the ball.
“If we’re compact against a team that’s very good in transition and wait for our moments to break, we’ll give ourselves a good chance.”
Building Momentum at the Right Time
Back-to-back clean sheets have helped steady Sydney’s run-in, with narrow 1-0 victories proving decisive.
“Of course we’d like to score more goals,” Talay said with a smile. “But I’d rather win five games 1-0 than one game 5-0.
“We are creating chances — we just need to execute those moments. Defensively we’ve been solid the last couple of weeks, and one goal has been enough to get all three points.”
With the season entering its final stretch, Talay insists the approach won’t change.
“We take it game by game. Every game is vital. We can’t look too far ahead. Our opposition is Melbourne Victory this weekend and we need to maximise every opportunity to get three points.”
New Faces Settling In
Sydney’s recent signings continue to integrate into the squad, with Talay pleased by their progress.
“They’ve been great. We’re trying to give them maximum game time to build match fitness,” he said.
“The more games they play, the better they’ll be. That cohesion and connection improves with minutes.”
Trophy Ambitions Clear
When asked about the Premier’s Plate, Talay was unequivocal.
“That’s what we strive towards. Sydney FC is always a club that wants to win trophies. We have games in front of us that we need to win, and wherever we land, we land.”
With clashes against teams above them still to come, the equation remains straightforward — win now and apply pressure.
Big Blue Beckons
Despite calls for more goals, Talay acknowledged the challenge of breaking down disciplined opponents.
“It would be nice to have a PlayStation controller to make it happen,” he joked. “But football doesn’t work that way.
“It’s hard being the protagonist, always trying to break teams down. Brisbane and Wellington set up very well defensively against us and looked to hit in transition or from set pieces.
“We try to take the game by the horns and create moments, but it’s not easy.”

Team selection is unlikely to shift dramatically given recent results.
“The team’s doing well, so it’s hard to make changes. You’ve got to be fair to the players who have been producing and winning games. Most likely we’ll stick with the same team and build that cohesion.”
And for supporters considering whether to be there on Saturday night, Talay had a clear message.
“The Big Blue is always a great occasion. Melbourne Victory are one of our biggest rivals, so it’s always entertaining. Hopefully we entertain them and make them happy.”
With history, rivalry and ladder position all on the line, Saturday night promises another compelling chapter in the Big Blue story as both sides meet for the 70th time.
