Football United members in Sydney-s South-West had the chance to show their skills this week when program ambassador, Alex Brosque and his Sydney FC team-mate, Matt Jurman paid a visit to Lurnea High School to join in Refugee Week celebrations.
Brosque and Jurman took time out to talk with the kids who-ve come to the program from all corners of the globe, before putting them through their paces in a series of drills. The Sydney FC stars then joined in some small sided games, with Brosque helping out the all-girls team.
Football United is an initiative of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales, and is run in partnership with Councils, Migrant Resource Centres, football clubs and associations, and Sydney FC.
The program uses football to build opportunities for belonging, racial harmony and social inclusion amongst Australia-s new immigrants, and has been selected to send a side to the Football Festival of Hope, which will be run as part of celebrations surrounding next year-s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
