Sydney ready to face the Fury

Sydney FC will be looking to convert great pre-season form into regular season success when it begins its chase for the 2009/10 title on Saturday evening against the North Queensland Fury in Townsville.

After a long build up, the match will be the first official taste of Hyundai A-League action for new Sydney FC Coach, Vitezslav Lavicka and he and his team can-t wait.

“We are ready to start,” said the Czech mentor. “We had good pre-season, the players worked very hard during all 15 weeks. We played many pre-season games and it was good feedback for me as a coach.”

“Everyone is ready to start – the fans of course. I am happy – I want to start on Saturday.”

The Sky Blues are tipped to get off to a winning beginning against the competition newcomers at Dairy Farmers Stadium, having disposed of the Fury 4-nil in a friendly match in Sydney in late June. Lavicka is taking nothing for granted, however, and knows his team will have to play well to take the three points against a very different North Queensland outfit that now contains former Liverpool legend, Robbie Fowler and a number of new signings.

“We have respect for all teams, especially for the North Queensland Fury because they are a new team,” he explained. “We played against them during pre-season but the main season is absolutely different to main season.”

The Moore Park men are determined to do well this season after falling short in their last campaign and the coach is confident fans will enjoy Sydney-s new style.

“Football is professional job for us, for players, coaching staff but football is entertainment for the fans. We would like to equalise the attractive play and the effective play as well,” said Lavicka.

Sydney FC will begin its 2009/10 Championship campaign when it lines up against North Queensland tomorrow (Saturday) evening at Townsville-s Dairy Farmers Stadium. Kick-off is at 5:30pm.
