Sydney FC’s opening Westfield W-League and A-League doubleheader against Melbourne City at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on December 30 has been postponed.

With states and territories imposing border restrictions on New South Wales following the Northern Beaches COVID-19 outbreak, Melbourne City’s players and staff would need to isolate for 14 days in Victoria on their return.

It means the Grand Final rematches will now be re-scheduled for a later date which is yet to be confirmed.

“It is unfortunate as it was set to be a remarkable occasion, however we must accept the decision in the best interests of the A-League and Westfield W-League,” said Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Danny Townsend.

“New South Wales has some coronavirus issues right now, however if we can fulfil fixtures both here and around the country by rescheduling, then we must do what we can to achieve this.

“New South Wales continues to respond well to the recent outbreak, so we are confident the schedule will resume as planned as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, we need to respond to the current border closures and provide the appropriate notice to our Members and fans that the match needs to be postponed.”

Sydney FC’s first match of the A-League 2020/21 season will now be their away clash against the Wellington Phoenix at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Saturday, January 2nd, 2021 (kick off 5:05pm AEDT), while the Sky Blues home Sydney Derby on Saturday 16th January at Stadium Australia is brought forward to kick off at 5.05pm. The Westfield W-League match originally scheduled for this game is still under consideration and will be confirmed later this week.

Sydney FC’s home clash with Central Coast Mariners in Match Week 5 has also seen its date brought forward to start at 7:05pm on Friday January 22nd.

In the Westfield W-League, Sydney FC will now begin their 2020/21 campaign with a massive away #SydneyDerby at Bankwest Stadium on Wednesday, December 30th, 2020 (kick off 4:35pm AEDT).
