Match Report

Sydney FC has put in a dominant first performance of the season to secure a 2-1 win over fierce rivals Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium.

Joe Lolley gave the Sky Blues an early first half lead after being given time and space in the box to slot the ball home right footed.

Hammond equalised eleven minutes into the second half with a well taken strike from just inside the box.

Douglas Costa was instrumental in providing the cross for the winner

However it didn’t remain level for long when Douglas Costa’s cross from the right was flicked on by Hayden Matthews to Klimala to flick a header home.

The Sky Blues could have had a third were it not for a fine save by Vidackovic from Klimala in the Wanderers goal.

Max Burgess was sent off in the closing minutes which led to a ferocious final few minutes but the Sky Blues held on for the deserved win.

What They SaidUfuk Talay:

“The Derby is always chaotic at the start and it was never going to be a free flowing game where one team dominates, especially being at their ground.

“I thought we settled into the game and had some good combinations at times and the boys dug deep and I always say to them I think what makes us special is our attitude and mentality and that was on show tonight.

“They will build confidence from this game, obviously the first one is always the toughest game and it’s the derby as well and I’m really pleased with what the boys produced.”

Over 27,000 fans packed into CommBank Stadium

Douglas Costa:

“What a special moment to win the first game, the derby.

“Of course we have a lot of things to improve but it’s the first game away and a big opponent as well.

“We did really well, I tried to push the boys forward to score more goals, I promise we will score more because we missed a lot today.

“For the first game it was a fantastic impact.”
