Sydney FC Trio In Socceroos Squad

Sydney FC stars Rhyan Grant, Anthony Caceres and Hayden Matthews have been selected for Australia’s Socceroos squad for their crucial World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

It’s the first time three Sydney FC players have been named in a Socceroos squad for World Cup qualifiers and underlines the excellent start to the season for the club.

The Socceroos will face Saudi Arabia in Melbourne next Thursday night, followed by an away fixture against Bahrain the Wednesday after (20th).

The two games are critical in Australia’s journey towards securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, with the Socceroos, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain all on five points from four games.

For Anthony Caceres, the call-up is particularly special as it represents a chance to makes his debut for the Socceroos at the age of 32.

“I’m incredibly proud and grateful for this opportunity,” he said.

“It’s a huge honour to be called into the Socceroos particularly for two critical games, and I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got for my country.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about from an early age, and I’m ready to contribute to helping us qualify for the World Cup.”

Sydney FC Academy graduate Hayden Matthews only signed his first professional contract nine months ago in January, and hasn’t represented Australia at any level.

Matthews has had an incredible nine months.

He expressed his excitement and his gratitude to the Sky Blues pathway which has led to his call-up.

“This is a massive moment for me,” said the 20-year old.

“Getting the chance to represent Australia is a dream come true, and I couldn’t be happier.

“It’s has been an incredible year so far and I have to pinch myself to believe it.

“I am incredibly grateful to Sydney FC and everyone at the club for their belief in me since the age of 12 and for sticking by me through the tough times [two broken legs].

“I’m determined to pay back that faith and to represent this club and the Socceroos to the best of my ability.”

Rhyan Grant won his last Socceroos cap in March 2022 against Japan.

Sky Blues skipper Rhyan Grant, who won the last of his 21 caps in the World Cup qualifier versus Japan in March 2022, was thrilled by his unexpected recall.

“I honestly didn’t see this coming, but I’m absolutely delighted,” he said.

“It’s always an honour to be selected for your country and if I get the chance I’ll give it my all as always.

“We’ve had a really great start to this season which has no doubt helped my selection.

“Thanks to all my team-mates for raising the bar and enabling Cass, Hayden and I to win these call-ups.

“I’m ready to fight tooth and nail, if called upon, to ensure Australia is in a fantastic qualification position following these two games.”

Sydney FC’s Head Coach, Ufuk Talay, praised his players and says they won’t let the Socceroos down.

“I’m ecstatic for Anthony, Hayden, and Rhyan,” he said.

“They’ve all worked extremely hard, and they truly deserve this recognition.

“I know they will repay the faith Tony [Popovic – Socceroos Head Coach] has shown in them and it’s a real credit to them and their families.

“To have three players selected for a World Cup qualifier is a proud moment for Sydney FC and I urge all Sky Blues Members and fans to come out this Sunday evening and show their appreciation – these boys deserve it.”

All three players will play for Sydney FC in this Sunday evening’s clash with Macarthur FC at Allianz Stadium kicking off at 6pm in the last chance to congratulate the three players.
