Sydney FC has signed central defender Alexandar Popovic on loan until the end of January from Korean K-League club Gwanju.
The talented 22-year-old, joins the Sky Blues with the aim of bolstering the team’s defensive stocks in preparation for Thursday’s AFC Champions League 2 clash with Eastern SC at Jubilee Stadium.
Popovic has been with the Korea club for the past year having previously been at Adelaide United when he was selected in the A-League All Stars squad to face Barcelona at Accor Stadium.
“I’m thrilled to be joining such a prestigious club like Sydney FC,” he said.
“It’s a huge opportunity for me, and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch and contribute to the team’s success.
“My goal is to help the team keep things tight at the back, and hopefully, we can push for silverware across all competitions.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the coaching staff and playing in front of the amazing Sydney FC fans.”
Head Coach Ufuk Talay believes Popovic will bring valuable defensive solidity and versatility to the squad.
“Alexandar is a young, hungry defender with great potential,” he said.
“He’s strong in the air, good on the ball, and has a strong tactical awareness for someone his age.
“We’re confident he will make a significant impact during his time with us and strengthen our defensive options as we navigate a busy season in the league and Champions League. We’re excited to have him on board.”
Sydney FC will have an option to buy Popovic after the loan and he is available for Thursday’s clash with Hong Kong side Eastern SC.
He will wear the number 41 shirt.
Meanwhile attacker Jay Maltz has been included in the Sky Blues ACL2 squad.
