Sydney FC Remain On Top Despite Wellington Defeat

Sydney FC 0 def. by Wellington Phoenix 1 (Taylor 32′)

Sydney FC have been beaten in a shock upset by bottom of the ladder Wellington Phoenix thanks to a solitary Kate Taylor goal on a hot day at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

Moments That Mattered:

GREEN CHANCE – 15’- Green fires in a left foot shot from inside the box which Edwards does well to tip over the bar.

TAYLOR GOAL – 32’ – Sydney FC fail to clear a corner properly and the ball drops to Taylor who hammers it home.

BADAWIYA SHOT SAVED – 67’ – Rola makes room for a shot inside the box but Edwards holds onto the ball.

HAWKESBY CHANCE – 76’ – Vine gets clear down the right and lays the ball inside to Hawkesby who has only the keeper to beat but Edwards miraculously manages to deflect the ball just past the post.

Brianna Edwards made some good saves to deny Sydney FC

What They Said: Ante Juric: “It’s disappointing because we always want to win and we are a team who are used to winning.

“You’ve got to give credit to Wellington because they were quite aggressive and probably deserved their win due to their work rate.

“We did have chances but not heaps but having five or six starters out doesn’t help.

“We lost a few leaders on the park and we struggled to cope without the likes of Tobin, Charlotte and Jada.

“We weren’t at our best today.”

Match Report: Sydney FC have gone down to Wellington Phoenix at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium after a solitary Kate Taylor first half goal made the difference.

The Sky Blues had limited chances in a quiet game in hot conditions.  Anna Green’s first half shot was well saved by Edwards in the Phoenix goal and the keeper was at it again in the second half to brilliantly deny Mackenzie Hawkesby.

The Sky Blues travel to Melbourne City next week and remain on top of the ladder after Western United’s defeat to Brisbane Roar.
