Sydney FC-s players have returned from their Italian pre-season training camp in top condition – that-s the claim from two of their number, who were put through a gruelling three week regime.
Striker Corey Gameiro and goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic hit the Macquarie University Sporting Fields this week having had a few days recuperation following their trip.
“We worked hard for three weeks in Italy, got our time off and now we-re into the final block of hard yards before the season starts,” said the keeper.
“Everyone is buzzing to be back and everyone looked fit and ready to go, so I think it-s going to be good.”
“It [Italy] was heavy,” said Gameiro. “We did 56 training sessions in 21 days so it was tough, but going over there we knew that we were going to work hard.
“The team is looking good now and everyone has had a good bit of down time, and looked really sharp and fresh on the first day back, so it-s started well.”
Janjetovic is in a tussle with fellow stopper Ivan Necevski for a place in the starting eleven, after the pair traded spots during the Hyundai A-League 2012/13 season.
The former Sydney United keeper believes it will be just as close heading into this season.
“I would not have a clue [who will get the nod] and I don-t think I-m going to find out until nearer the season, so I-ve got my fingers crossed, I-m working hard and doing what I have to do to get that spot,” he said.
For Gameiro, the chance to play at the Sky Blues home ground and on his own patch in Wollongong is a prospect he is relishing.
“I haven-t played yet at the Allianz Stadium so I-m looking forward to getting down there in front of the home fans and also to the friendly at Wollongong,” said the 20 year old.
“That-ll be good to try and get some of the Wollongong support to come up for us this season, so there are a lot of games to look forward to.”
