Following their Championship winning season, six Sydney FC players from the W-League have been called up to the Westfield Matildas squad.

Head Coach Tom Sermanni announced a 20 player squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand with matches in Wellington on the 17th and 20th of February against the New Zealand Women’s national team, Football Ferns.

Sydney FC captain Heather Garriock was one of those six having already made 113 appearances for the national team with 13 goals. After an impressive performance for the Sky Blue women, Kylie Ledbrook has been recalled after a four year absence from the national squad.

Sarah Walsh has also been included in the squad. The Sydney FC forward had a stellar season with the Sky Blues and is looking to build on her international goal tally, having scored 26 goals from 57 appearances for the Matildas. Leena Khamis, Kyah Simon and Servet Uzunlar were the other three Sydney FC players announced.

Head Coach Tom Sermanni is confident his squad is developing on track in what is essentially a World Cup qualification year. “The squad that will travel to New Zealand has a great depth of talent.”

“Since 2008 we have been in a rebuilding phase for the Westfield Matildas following the retirement of some key players,” said Sermanni.

“We’ve got a great mix of experience and youth in this group of players and this blend is sure to serve us well as we continue our progress towards a fifth successive World Cup appearance.”

The Westfield Matildas’ first match against New Zealand is on the 17 of February at North Harbour Stadium in Albany.
