Sydney FC Handed Tough AFC Champions League 2 Last 16 Draw

Sydney FC will face current Thai Premier League joint leaders Bangkok United in the last 16 of the AFC Champions League 2, when the competition resumes in February.

It will be a tough assignment for the Sky Blues against a team who won their own ACL 2 group recently, having finished second in the Thai League last season while also winning the Thai FA Cup and Champions Cup.

Bangkok also finished top of their Champions League (Elite) group last year only being knocked out in the Round of 16 by a last minute penalty from the eventual finalists Yokohama F. Marinos, who were then coached by former Socceroos star Harry Kewell.

They play at the 25,000-seater Thammasat Stadium and have won the Thai league once in their history.

Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay said: “I’m excited to play Bangkok United who are currently doing well in their domestic competition in equal 1st but second on the table.

“We don’t know much else about them just yet but we’ll do our homework and will definitely be ready.

“I’m sure it will be a difficult task but we are looking forward to the challenge and it will be an enjoyable experience as well.”

The first leg will be played in Sydney in the week commencing 10th February before the away leg in Bangkok a week later.

Dates, venues and ticket details will be announced in due course.
