The Lugarno Football Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a $3,000 donation thanks to the Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA) and Sydney FC following the Sky Blues 2-1 victory over Melbourne Heart at Allianz Stadium last night.

The club, which is a member of the St George Football Association, received the donation for being selected to participate in the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program.

As the selected club, Lugarno Football Club received $1,000, with the opportunity to increase their donation amount by $1,000 for every goal Sydney FC scored.

The Sky Blues- dramatic brace in the final 10 minutes took Lugarno-s donation total to $3,000. On top of that, the grassroots club was able to enjoy an array of match day benefits including tickets to the game and an on field presentation.

“Our club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It was founded on the principle that football should be open to all regardless of ability,” said Lugarno Football Club representative Hagop Tchamkertenian.

“Our long term goals are to install lighting on the fields so we can train in the evenings and to build a clubhouse for everyone to enjoy. The Hyundai grant will go towards helping us achieve these goals.”

The Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program was initiated to support the growth of football in Australia by nurturing the game at its grassroots level. It has been running for five years and it offers support to local clubs across the country by providing funding in much needed areas. Already over $300,000 has been donated to worthy grassroots clubs around Australia.

“Hyundai and Sydney FC get enormous pleasure seeing the young future football stars down at the match cheering on their local teams,” said Sydney FC player Brett Emerton.

“The future and the heart of the game are here with the kids, and we are delighted to be able to play a part in encouraging and nurturing the community teams.”

Local and community based clubs can apply for selection in the program by completing an on-line application indicating why their club should receive support from the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program during Season eight of the Hyundai A-League.

Applications can be completed at www.goalsforgrassroots.com.au . To be eligible, clubs must belong to an association affiliated with the Football Federation Australia (FFA). The Hyundai Goals for Grassroots Facebook page will feature the winning team each week and will work as an online community where clubs can share stories and tips www.facebook.com/goalsforgrassroots.
