Sydney FC faces a season-defining game against Newcastle Jets at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday with a victory certain to greatly enhance the Sky Blues- semi final and top four aspirations. A loss will see them fall out of the top six.

Sydney FC sits in 6th place on the competition ladder and faces 7th-placed Newcastle while Melbourne Heart (5th) takes on Melbourne Victory (8th) in what could be a pivotal weekend as league leaders Central Coast play Brisbane Roar (3rd).

With just eight rounds of the Hyundai A-League remaining, Sydney FC goes into the match with a two point buffer from Newcastle and could extend that to as much as five points with a win and move to within three points of 2nd-placed Wellington.

The permutations are endless in what is shaping as a very tight race for the Top Two and Top Six.

History is certainly in Sydney FC-s favour on Sunday as the Sky Blues have won seven of the last nine matches between the two teams, including a 2-1 win in Newcastle earlier this year.

Throw in the fact that there are nine players from both sides (Sydney FC-s Nick Carle, Mark Bridge and Ivan Necevski – Newcastle-s Sung-Hwan Byun, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Jeremy Brockie, Michael Bridges, Ruben Zadkovich and Chris Payne) who will be facing their former club, and there is sure to be fireworks.
