Match Report: Sydney FC has given their Finals Series hopes a boost with a fantastic 3-2 comeback win over Newcastle Jets who had taken an early 2-0 lead.

The win lifts the Sky Blues back into the Finals positions in sixth place just three points from a fourth place home Final.

In an early period of dominance, the Jets capitalised with a goal from Lachlan Rose who scored in the midst of chaos in the box in the 18th minute.

Newcastle extended their lead four minutes later through their Japanese winger Kota Mizunuma following Clayton Taylor’s cross.

A pre-game presentation to Sydney FC keeper Andrew Redmayne

Sydney FC strook back on 36th minutes when a disorganised Newcastle counter attack saw Lachlan Rose dispossessed by Douglas Costa on the edge of the box and calmly slotted it into the bottom right corner of the net to pull one back for Sydney FC.

The Sky Blues emerged from the tunnel fired up and ready to overturn the Newcastle advantage.

They did it with an equaliser from Adrian Segecic 10 minutes into the second half after an under pressure Rhyan Grant finds him wide open in the box.  Segecic glides the ball between two defenders and bounces it off the right post and in.

As the game winded down Rhyan Grant burst forward into the opposition half and made a well picked pass to Jaiden Kucharski who is waiting just outside the box.

He takes a touch and lines up a shot with his right foot into the far post to put Sydney FC ahead.

It’s crucial win as they enter the final two games of the regular season and the Finals are within reach.

The game ended with youching scenes as The Cove serenaded Andrew Redmayne in his final regular season home game of his Sydney FC career, a fitting way to send off a fan-favourite and club legend.

What They Said: Ufuk Talay: “”We probably didn’t start the best and conceded two early goals, but I think from around the 25th or 30th minute, we really got ourselves back into the game, which was great. We managed to score just before halftime, which definitely helped.

“That gave us a real opportunity in the second half to go out and try to win the game. At the moment, it’s backs to the wall, but the positive is that it’s still in our hands. We just need to win the games in front of us to give ourselves a chance at playing finals football.

“The players responded really well in the second half, and we got the goals we needed. Overall, from that 25th or 30th minute onward, I thought it was actually a solid performance from the team.”

“We could have scored a couple more goals if we had a bit more composure in front of the box but we picked up maximum points.

“Redders has been massive for the club… He’s been great for Australian football.”

“I think he’s (Klimala) got a cyst on his knee, nothing there structurally… straight line theres no problems but change of direction there’s a bit of pain.”
