Sydney FC Captain Alex Wilkinson will lead the Sky Blues again in season 2020/21 after re-signing for a further season today.
A two-time Hyundai A-League Championship and Premiership winner with the Sky Blues, Wilkinson is set to enter the list of top 10 appearance makers at the club with this new deal, having currently played 111 games across all competitions for the club.*
The 16-capped Socceroo has enjoyed one of the most successful periods in his career at Sydney FC, also winning the FFA Cup in 2017 and being voted into the PFA Team of the Season as a member of the Sky Blues’ all conquering record-breaking squad.
“I’m thrilled to be re-signing with a club that has given me so much over the last four years,” Wilkinson said.
“I’ve enjoyed some of my best football at Sydney FC and I’m eager for that to continue along with all the success we’ve had.
“This squad is a pleasure to Captain and it’s always an honour to pull on the Sky Blue shirt and represent my home city.”
Wilkinson’s re-signing will ensure the Sky Blues’ central defensive partnership remains intact, with Ryan McGowan also contracted for the 2020/21 season.
Head Coach Steve Corica welcomed Wilkinson’s re-signing and said the stability it provides was a huge bonus for the new season ahead.
“To have our central defensive pairing locked in for season 2020/21 is a massive win and a real positive for the club,” Corica said.
“Alex has been an exceptional leader and his experience has proven invaluable across all levels at Sydney FC.
“I’m looking forward to having Alex as a part of our squad again next season and congratulate him on his efforts to date.”
Sydney FC return to Hyundai A-League action on Sunday 1 December away against Western United at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong (kick off 4pm AEDT).
