Sydney FC Announce Academy Squads

Sydney FC has announced 119 young footballers from across Sydney and New South Wales have been selected to represent the Sydney FC Academy during the 2022 season.

The potential Sky Blues stars of the future arrive from junior clubs as far south as Illaroo FC and Bomaderry FC, as far north as Avalon Soccer Club and from Maccabi Hakoah Sydney City FC in the East.

Sydney FC’s scouting network, which has already spotted and brought through the likes of Harry Van der Saag, Patrick Wood, Calem Nieuwenhof and Patrick Yazbek, has also recruited players from junior clubs as far west as Griffith City FC as well as Tigers FC in Canberra.

In total 21 players have come from Sydney FC Academy Schools which makes up 17.5% of the overall number, while 88% of the new Under 13’s intake had attended the club’s Academy Training Program for 11 and 12 year olds in the year prior.

These figures are a testament to the club’s Academy recruitment strategy, within the Sydney and NSW community over the past three years, has been effective.

Sydney FC were the most highly represented club of the recent Olyroos squad which qualified for the AFC Under 23’s Asian Cup next year with four players – Adam Pavlesic, Callum Talbot, Patrick Yazbek and Patrick Wood – in the successful squad.

Technical Director – Youth Kelly Cross believes the club has some real potential to improve on national squad selection at all levels this year.

“We’ve once again got a fantastic set of players who are honest, hard-working, good young people,” he said.

“Once we add our dedicated and professional coaching staff into the equation, I think we have all the hallmarks to develop some exceptional players with exciting futures in the game.

“We are all looking forward to a successful season but most importantly watching our players and staff understand more about themselves as footballers and coaches, and become better club mates.”

Sydney FC would like to congratulate all players selected in the squads and wish all players, staff, coaches, and parents the very best for the upcoming year.
