Sydney FC’s rising star Wataru Kamijo is relishing his breakthrough season, but has admitted the jump to senior football has been a steep but rewarding challenge.
“The game is quicker and sharper, and everyone is a step ahead,” the 18-year-old midfielder said.
“The step up is palpable, but I’m learning so much with every game and even in training.”
Kamijo has started five out of the last six games for the Sky Blues earning the trust of Head Coach Ufuk Talay in both domestic and continental competitions.

He credits his rapid development to the experienced players around him.
“Leo Sena has helped me a lot,” he said. “We communicate as best we can despite the language barrier, and he teaches me what he can,” Kamijo said.
“Caceres and Dougie [Douglas Costa] have also guided me, and it’s been great learning from them.”
While Kamijo’s technical ability has been evident, he believes his biggest improvement has been on the defensive side of his game.
“I’ve grown stronger physically and can compete with men now,” he explained. “I’ve also worked on balancing my attacking and defensive play, which has helped the team.”
Sydney FC midfielder Wataru Kamijo gives his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to South Australia to take on Adelaide United in a crucial clash.
With Sydney FC fighting for a top-six spot, Kamijo understands the significance of Saturday’s clash against Adelaide United.
“It’s a huge game, and the boys know how important it is,” he said.
“Playing in these big matches is what I’ve worked towards, and it’s an honour to be on the pitch representing the club.”
The Sky Blues head to Adelaide on Friday afternoon and will take on the Reds who sit three points ahead of them on Saturday at 7.35pm.
A win would put Sydney FC ahead of Adelaide United on goal difference and into the Finals spots.
