Slovakian International Signs

Sydney FC has completed the signing of 73-time Slovakian international winger Robert Mak on a two-year contract.

The 31-year-old has won eight titles across Europe after playing stints in Germany, Greece, Russia, Turkey and more recently Hungary, where he won the Hungarian title with Ferencváros in the last two seasons.

He is the ninth highest appearance maker in Slovakian international history with 73 caps, including at Slovakia’s Euro 2016 and 2020 campaigns, and sits joint fourth on the country’s list of top goalscorers.

The international has also played over 30 games in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League and the move to Sydney FC is one he is relishing.

“This is going to be a fantastic challenge for me and it’s a real honour to be signing for Australia’s biggest and most successful club.

“I’ve been part of a few Championships and Cup wins in my career, so I know what it takes and want to bring my experience, personality and a few goals and assists to help us this season.

“Going into the new stadium this is going to be a huge season,” he continued.

“Having spoken to Karol (Kisel) and Filip (Holosko), I am 100% determined to achieve the same success they achieved by also winning the Premiership and Championship double for this great club.”

Mak was signed by English Premiers League Champions Manchester City as a 15-year-old, such was his talent, and spent three years in the City Academy.

A move to German club Nuremburg and PAOK where he won the Greek Cup followed, before Mak joined Zenit St. Petersburg, winning two Championships and two Russian Cups.

Sydney FC Head Coach Steve Corica predicts he will be a major hit with Sky Blues Members.

“Robert is an excellent player. He has two great feet and can play on either side of the pitch,” he said.

“He likes to take on defenders and will create and score goals for us as well.

“To play that many times for your country is no mean feat and I think he will really stand out this season.

“It’s a very good signing for us, we’ve taken our time to get him and there’s more to come.”

Mak is also an FA Youth Cup winner with Manchester City and has made 347 career club appearances in the top divisions in Europe scoring 71 goals.

The best way to see Robert Mak in action next season is by signing up for a Sydney FC Membership.
