Match Report:

Sydney FC battled hard in a fast-paced and physical A-League Women contest, with both sides creating chances in an open and demanding encounter. Despite a strong push from the Sky Blues, Newcastle Jets capitalised on key moments to claim the result.

Interim manager James Slaveski has made a slight adjustment to the lineup, with Willa Pearson starting in place of Caley Tallon- Henniker, while Alyse Oppedisano comes onto the bench for Sofia Fante as the backup goalkeeper.

Sydney FC were made to work hard in a demanding first half as Newcastle Jets applied heavy pressure, taking a 2–1 lead into the break after a fast-paced and physical opening 45 minutes.

The Jets started brightly and quickly established territory inside Sydney FC’s half, forcing the Sky Blues onto the back foot early. Despite Newcastle’s early dominance, the first clear opportunity fell to Sydney FC when Claire Corbett struck inside the box in the 8th minute, forcing a sharp save from Jets goalkeeper Georgia Ritchie.

Moments later the intensity of the contest was evident, with Riley Tanner shown a yellow card in the 10th minute for retaliation after being fouled in midfield during a period where both sides were committing several challenges.

Sydney FC capitalised soon after. In the 15th minute, captain Mackenzie Hawkesby punished a goalkeeping mistake after the Jets keeper ventured outside her box, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Sky Blues the lead.

The advantage, however, was short-lived as Newcastle continued to dominate possession and push numbers forward. Their pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Melina Ayres capitalised on a defensive mistake to level the score.

Sydney FC began to settle into the match around the midway point of the half, showing more composure in possession and spending longer periods in Newcastle territory. Hawkesby nearly restored the lead in the 28th minute, unleashing a powerful strike that sailed just over the crossbar.

Just minutes later, the Jets struck again. Persistent pressure from Sophie Hoban forced a loose clearance inside the Sydney FC defensive third, allowing the forward to react quickest and finish to give Newcastle the lead in the 31st minute.

The Cove.

The goal further energised the Jets, who continued to dominate territory and force Sydney FC into several mistakes as they chased a third goal. Newcastle spent long stretches inside the Sky Blues’ half, peppering the defence with attacking pressure.

Late in the half, however, Sydney FC began to grow back into the contest. With more time on the ball and fewer defensive errors, the Sky Blues started to build momentum and apply pressure inside the Newcastle half, searching for an equaliser before the break.

Despite Sydney FC’s late improvement and a strong attacking effort from both sides, Newcastle’s defence held firm as the Jets maintained their advantage heading into halftime.

Sydney FC huddle.

Sydney FC returned from the break with renewed intensity, immediately placing Newcastle under sustained pressure as they searched for an equaliser. The Sky Blues controlled possession early in the half, pushing forward with intent and spending long stretches inside the Jets’ half.

The first major chance of the half came in the 51st minute when Sydney FC regained possession high up the field, allowing Mackenzie Hawkesby to drive at her defender before firing a shot narrowly wide of the post. The opportunity set the tone for a dominant period where Sydney FC continued to dictate play while Newcastle struggled to retain the ball.

Despite Sydney FC’s control, the Jets remained dangerous on the counterattack. Sydney FC continued to press forward, but their finishing let them down as frustration began to build while the equaliser remained elusive.

Sydney FC came close again in the 68th minute when a curling corner was cleared only as far as Claire Corbett on the edge of the area, whose strike drifted narrowly past the post. Just minutes later, Corbett created another opportunity after winning possession from a defender, but her effort again slipped just wide.

Although Sydney FC appeared to be winning the physical battle and dominating territory, Newcastle struck against the run of play in the 74th minute. A perfectly weighted chipped pass split the Sydney FC defence and found Sophie Hoban, who finished to extend the Jets’ lead.

The goal was a blow for Sydney FC, but the Sky Blues continued to push forward in search of a response. Substitutions injected fresh energy into the side and Sydney FC maintained attacking pressure, although Newcastle’s defence remained compact and disciplined as the match entered its closing stages.

Late in the contest the Jets threatened again on the counter, forcing a brilliant save from Heather Hinz deep into stoppage time to deny another goal.

In the end, Sydney FC’s second-half pressure wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit as Newcastle managed to hold on for the win.

What They Said: Mackenzie HAWKESBY:-

“Our season’s been insane. We’ve had a lot of injuries, we’ve had just things happen along the way, and yeah, obviously it’s hard, we’ve lost a place injury in the last few weeks.”

“That’s football happens to every team. We just got to adjust best way we can.”

“Yeah, there’s definitely been a big shift since James came in. We’re playing much better football now and creating a lot more chances.”

“The younger players are still learning. Sometimes that comes with moments like missing a one-on-one or small mistakes like that. But there are no excuses — we’re Sydney FC and we expect a lot from ourselves.”

“In terms of our football though, possession-wise and the way we’re playing, things have definitely improved. The younger players have actually stepped up a lot and have been playing really well.”
