Sydney FC head to the nation’s capital today to face Canberra FC at Deakin Stadium (kick off 7pm) as the Sky Blues continue their preseason preparations with the Hyundai A-League only one month away.
While Canberra FC may be out of season the state league side will be champing at the bit to face the Sky Blues and one player who knows them better than most is youngster George Timotheou.
The 17 year old defender spent his formative years playing for Gungahlin United and Belconnen United, facing Canberra FC on multiple occasions, and the young Sky Blue is eager to play in front of his home crowd again.
“Going back tomorrow night and playing against one of the old teams I used to play against in Canberra is always good,” Timotheou said.
“Hopefully I get the chance to play and hopefully I’ll have the home crowd behind me.”
TImotheou said the Sky Blues would have to be on song as he expects a tough time against a Canberra FC side who finished fourth in the Capital Football National Premier League.
“It will definitely be a challenge,” said Timotheou
“They’re a good side and it’s not going to be an easy game. This is the game of their life, they get the chance to play Sydney FC, so they’re not going to hold back.
“We need to worry about ourselves and our game plan and not too much on them though because at the end of the day we’re the most massive team in Australia so we have to be on our game.”
Moving home cities at such a young age is never an easy feat however Timotheou has settled well into life in Sydney and is hopeful of continuing to pick up valuable experience during his time with the Sky Blues.
“My time at Sydney FC has been very positive so far,” Timotheou said.
“I’m over the moon with my last three months at the club and I’ve loved every minute of it.
“For sure leaving family and friends is always tough but I always knew that my goal was to play football and to think that now I’m playing for Sydney FC in only three months is amazing.
I’m just hoping to get some game time under my belt Wednesday night, and some more experience before the season starts. I’ll do whatever I can for my team if I get the chance.”
