Sydney FC Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo believes Wednesday night’s Sydney Super Cup clash with English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur will provide the perfect benchmark for his squad as preparations continue for the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The Sky Blues welcome one of world football’s biggest clubs to Sydney in a blockbuster encounter, giving players the rare opportunity to measure themselves against elite international opposition.
For Kisnorbo, the occasion is about far more than the result.
“It’s a great learning for everybody involved,” he said.
“The players will see the level they could be up against. It’s a great hit-out for us and a great opportunity to compare where we’re at at this stage of pre-season.
“It’s great for our sport that we can play against the best teams, the best players and one of the best coaches in the world.”
The match also marks a different chapter for Kisnorbo after taking charge at the end of last season, guiding Sydney FC to the Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final.
This time, the Head Coach has enjoyed a full pre-season to implement his ideas from day one.
“When I came in, I needed to get the team into the finals,” he said.
“Now I’ve got the preparation time to build the team into the season. They’re two different scenarios, but the outcome we want is still the same.”
While Kisnorbo acknowledged there could still be movement in the transfer market before the new campaign begins, he is pleased with the commitment shown by the current squad.
“There could be some movement soon, but at the moment we have the players we have and they’ve been training fantastically well,” he said.
“I’ll only bring in players that we think are useful and good characters for our team.”
The former Socceroo believes facing Tottenham will challenge every aspect of his players’ game.
“They’ll see the physicality, the technical level and the mental side of the game,” he said.
“It’s a fantastic challenge for them to test themselves against some of the best players in the world.”
Defender Jordan Courtney-Perkins is equally excited by the opportunity, describing the fixture as a unique experience for the squad.
“It’s what an opportunity it is for us to play against one of the best teams in the world and some of the best players in the world,” he said.
“We’ve been working really hard throughout pre-season and it’s a great chance to get more match minutes into the legs, but also to put ourselves up against the best and see where we’re at.”
Courtney-Perkins is looking to build on a strong finish to last season after forcing his way back into the starting side during Sydney FC’s run to the Grand Final.
“I love being at Sydney,” he said.
“It was probably an up-and-down season personally, but the most important thing for me is to keep my head down, work hard and help the team in any way I can.
“Whether that’s starting, coming off the bench or wherever I’m needed, I just want to keep improving.”
Having featured at both left back and centre back throughout his career, the versatile defender admits he feels most at home in the middle of defence but remains ready to play wherever required.
“Growing up I always said I was a centre back,” he said.
“It’s funny because I spent the first 70-odd games of my career playing left back.
“I enjoy playing centre half, but wherever the coach thinks I’m best suited, I’m happy to play.”
With anticipation building for one of the biggest fixtures in Sydney FC’s pre-season, the Sky Blues will relish the chance to test themselves against world-class opposition before turning their focus towards another A-League campaign.
