With the first Sydney Derby of the 2017/18 season at Allianz Stadium this Saturday looming large, we look back at five of the best Sky Blue Sydney Derby moments from seasons gone by.

Sydney FC have had the wood over their cross town rivals Western Sydney over the lifespan of the Sydney Derby, notching seven wins to their rivals four.

The Sky Blues have the tendency to snatch results away from the Wanderers ensuring the passionate Sky Blue faithful go home with all the bragging rights from the biggest domestic football fixture on the sporting calendar.

Take a look at a few of these amazing Derby moments we’ve enjoyed in the past in anticipation for another blockbuster clash this Saturday Night at Allianz Stadium!

Derby Story 1

THE FIRST DERBY – WHO ELSE BUT DEL PIERO

20th of October 2012 – 1-0 Win

How could we start it anywhere else but the very first Derby back in 2012. The World Cup winning Italian Del Piero dazzled his way through the box and past a number of Wanderers defenders before being brought down in the area for a spotkick. An ordered re-taking of the penalty from the official was never going to stop the Sky Blues’ number 10 from finding the back of the net, riffling a thunderous strike past a helpless Covic to secure inaugural Sydney Derby bragging rights.

Derby Story 2

ABBAS ADDS FROM THE SPOT TO SECURE 3-1 WIN

8th of March 2014 – 3-1 Win

Everyone at Allianz Stadium enjoyed this moment with it confirming our first Sydney Derby win at home. After Sydney FC had been gifted the lead from a defensive blunder by the opposition, the game flowed back and forth before the Sky Blues were awarded a penalty deep into injury time. Abbas stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball to his right, jumping into the crowd to celebrate with The Cove, to ensure he would always be remembered as a fan favourite.

Derby Story 3

CAPTAIN BROSQUE’S DERBY DAY DELIGHT

18th of October 2014 – 3-2 Win

A Sydney Derby that had everything – intense passion, a red card, five goals and a comeback capped off by Sky Blues’ captain and club legend Alex Brosque. It was Brosque’s first taste of the Sydney Derby and he wasted no time in influencing the great rivalry, slotting home from the six-yard area and sending the fans into raptures. This was a theme of things to come in future Derbies and the start of huge period of dominance over our cross-town rivals.

Derby Story 4

SMELTZ STUNNER IN SMASH AND GRAB WIN

16th January 2016 – 2-1 Win

With the 11th installment of the Derby tied up at a goal apiece with injury time looming, it was going to take something special and late to grab all three points.

A swinging free kick from Dimitrijevic and the following nod down from Jurman set up Shane Smeltz for what was surely the most spectacular goal in Sydney Derby history. Leaving one of the deadliest strikers since the competition’s start unmarked in the box was a huge mistake and it left Pirtek Stadium in stunned silence apart from the Sky Blue corner of ecstatic Sydney supporters.

Derby Story 5

THE DEMOLITION DERBY

8th of October 2016 – 4-0 Win

Before a ball had been kicked in the 2016/17 season, the tension had been building towards the opening round and a first Sydney Derby to be played at this stage of a season. A cagey first half was soon forgotten as the Sky Blues opened the floodgates shortly after the break through Holosko. The Sky Blues went on pile an additional three goals courtesy of Bobô, a peach of a free kick from Brandon O’Neil and rounded off by Captain Brosque to make it the biggest winning margin in Derby history. The win also marked well over a thousand days since a Western Sydney Derby day win.
