Inseob Shin-s second half goal ensured Adelaide United Youth returned home with all three points as they defeated Sydney FC Youth 1-0 at Sydney-s Seymour Park.
The Korean midfielder-s well executed chip over the Sydney keeper just minutes after the break gave the young Reds their first win of the season and their first win over Sydney FC Youth in eight attempts.
Originally scheduled to be played at the Sydney Football Stadium as a curtain raiser to the Hyundai A-League encounter, the match was moved to Seymour Park due to the heavy rain in Sydney over the weekend.
After starting slowly in the season opener against Perth Glory last weekend, United-s Youth were the ones to take the game up to the hosts early on, but they were unable to make any of their opportunities count in a scoreless opening 45 minutes.
But shortly after the restart Shin, who is on the Reds- Hyundai A-League playing roster, finished off a fine United move to break the deadlock.
Looking for a quick response, Sydney FC Youth upped the ante but they were not helped when they went a player down after Tommy Cirjack was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
Despite the extra man advantage, United-s Youth were still made to defend stoutly, with many of the Reds unfamiliar with Seymour Park-s synthetic turf.
Joe Mullen-s team managed to absorb the pressure and hold onto their lead until the final whistle, the victory certain to boost the side-s confidence heading into the coming weeks.
“What it does is give the nucleus of players that haven’t played together a bit of confidence with each other,” Mullen said after the win.
“Getting a result is always important as we start to settle as a team and as one unit. It always takes some weeks to gel but wins accelerate that and I think that’s a good thing going into Sunday.”
