Segecic Secures Dream European Move

Sydney FC can confirm that midfielder Adrian Segecic has joined English Championship side Portsmouth on a three-year contract.

The 21-year-old departs the Sky Blues after nine years of development through Sydney FC’s Academy system, capping off a remarkable journey that saw him graduate to the A-League Men’s team, earn junior national team honours, and now achieve a dream move to Europe.

Despite the Sky Blues making a number of strong offers to retain his services, Segecic has opted to challenge himself in one of the most competitive leagues in world football.

A proud product of Sydney FC’s pathway, Segecic spent time on loan at Dutch club FC Dordrecht last season before returning to light up the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.

His departure follows in the footsteps of fellow Academy graduates Hayden Matthews, Jake Girdwood-Reich, Cameron Peupion and Patrick Yazbek, who have all secured overseas moves in recent seasons.

Sydney FC will also receive a substantial six-figure fee in training compensation, for the talented Olyroos and Young Socceroos midfielder.

Adrian Segecic has been with the Sky Blues for nine years.

Segecic admitted it was a tough decision to leave but said the time was right to take the next step in his career.

“I’m honestly devastated to be leaving Sydney FC – this club has been my home for almost a decade,” said Segecic.

“But I know I have to test myself and find out how far I can take my career. I’m so excited for what’s ahead of me in England, but I’ll always be grateful to Sydney FC for the incredible opportunities they’ve given me.

Segecic was crowned Sydney FC Player Of The Year last season.

“Thank you to all my coaches, the staff, my teammates and of course to the amazing Members and fans who have supported me every step of the way.”

Head Coach Ufuk Talay praised Segecic’s attitude and progression during a breakout year.

“Adrian was exceptional last season. His hunger to improve and his desire to perform every week really stood out,” Talay said.

“He absolutely deserves this opportunity. While we would have loved to keep him at Sydney FC, he’s determined to test himself in one of the toughest leagues in world football, and we’re proud that our pathway has enabled him to do that.

Hayden Matthews & Adrian Segecic will reunite at Portsmouth

“Everyone at the club wishes Adrian the very best in the next chapter of his career. He’s a homegrown boy done good, and we’d love to see him back in Sky Blue one day.”

Segecic made 65 appearances for Sydney FC across all competitions, scoring 24 goals.

He was crowned the 2024-25 A-League Men Golden Boot winner and claimed a host of Sydney FC’s end-of-season awards – Player of the Year, Members’ Player of the Year and the Golden Boot. He was also recognised as the club’s Rising Star in the 2020-21 season.
