Sydney FC’s young star Adrian Segecic says he’s raring to get back on the Sky Blues training paddock after returning to Sky Park for the first time this week, following a successful year’s loan in the Dutch Eerste Divisie.
The recently turned 20-year-old enjoyed a year playing for Feyenoord’s feeder club FC Dordrecht and is excited to be back home.
“It’s really good to be back,” he said. “I haven’t seen the boys in a year so it’s good to see some old and new faces.
“I’m excited to see how things go this year and see what happens and feel really good.”
The attacking midfielder helped FC Dordrecht to the verge of promotion to Holland’s top flight finishing fourth in the competition and reaching the finals series.
He says the year away has made him a better player and he learned a lot.
“It was really good. I got a lot of minutes and to go there and to have a really good season, with the team, playing finals, getting some goals and assists, it was really good.
“It’s a very technical and pretty young league which I thought suited me really well.
“Getting a lot of game time against really good senior players was really good for my development.
“We had a lot of the ball and for me getting on the ball, running at players and expressing myself was a big part of what I was able to do over there.
“Halfway through the season it got really, really cold, which I’m not used to had to adapt to the weather but when we started to do really well and make finals, we had a lot more fans coming to games.”
Segecic also managed to catch up with a former Sydney FC star Pascal Bosschaart who became his Assistant Coach during the campaign.
“It was really good to have another person who played at Sydney FC so he understood what it’s like.
“We were really close and I learnt off him a lot, he was really working really closely with me.
“At the same time, a lot of players came in from Feyenoord and we were playing games against players from Ajax, PSV and Utrecht and had a lot of players from all around the world playing with us as well, Poland, Estonia, England, Belgium.”
Segecic was also able to keep an eye on the Sky Blues results from the other side of the world.
“I was watching all the games in the morning,” he continued. “The way they played and the high pressing reminded me a bit of the way we played overseas, so it was really good to see.”
And Segecic is excited to link up with Head Coach Ufuk Talay for the first time.
“I’ve only met him briefly so we haven’t had a proper conversation. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about him and I really like his coaching style. So yeah, it looks really good.”
Segecic re-acquainted himself with the Sky Blues yesterday and retains his number seven shirt.
