Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory very rarely see eye-to-eye but there was no hiding the fact that players and coaches from both sides of the border are looking forward to starting the season with the first edition of The Big Blue for 2011/12.

Sydney FC travels to Melbourne to take on fierce rivals Melbourne Victory in the opening match of the season and both sets of Coaches and Captains agreed the intensity will be white hot inside Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

The debut of Socceroos greats Brett Emerton (Sydney FC) and Harry Kewell (Melbourne Victory) have added to occasion, although the clash needs little extra spice to get the competitive juices flowing.

“We are looking forward to playing the first game, especially against our big rivals Melbourne Victory. It is a special game for everyone to play Melbourne Victory and we are looking for a good result,” said Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka.

Sydney FC Captain Terry McFlynn added: “Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory games have always been very special over the years and having two world class footballers (Emerton and Kewell) involved in this game makes it even more exciting for the fans.”

Victory Captain Adrian Leijer agreed: “The Sydney Melbourne games are always good and with Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton on board it will take it to the next level. It-s a great rivalry. We love playing each other and I can-t wait until Saturday.”

The final word went to Victory coach Mehmet Durakovic, who will make his Hyundai A-League coaching debut in the match. “We are very excited about the season and come Saturday hopefully everyone will see a great game between the two teams.”

The Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory match, to be played at Etihad Stadium, kicks off at 6.30pm on Saturday night.
