Ahead of the first ever, historic, Sydney FC PlayStation 4 NPL NSW 2 Men’s match today, we caught up with Sky Blues captain Yianni Spyrakis to get his take on the season ahead.
Season kicks off on Sunday, how much are you looking forward to it getting underway?
I’m excited for the season to start and carrying on from our NYL success. It will be a great opportunity for us to improve individually and collectively across the season.
How have preparations been for it?
[Head Coach] Rob Stanton and the coaching staff have been working hard to prepare us for a tough long season ahead. Everything we do in training is to improve our teams playing style.
What are you expecting from Sydney FC’s first season in the NPL?
This will be new to everyone at the club and we are expecting a tough season with challenges along the way. We have set long term and short term goals for the season and we hope to achieve these in 2016.
You’ve got NPL experience already, how will you use that to your advantage?
I hope to draw on my experiences from the last couple of years playing in the NPL 1. Throughout the break I have tried to help the boys that haven’t experienced playing in the NPL first grade competition, adapt to the tempo and physicality of to what they can expect to be up against.
What are the main differences you’re expecting from the NYL to NPL?
Definitely the physical aspect of the game will be challenging for us but one that we will work on to improve our all round game. Adapting to different styles of football from opposing teams from what we are used to in the NYL. We’ve got a young side that has always been eager to learn and develop so adapting to the NPL competition hopefully won’t be a hard transition.
Lastly, What are your goals for the season?
To help the team perform to our high standards on a regular basis and for me personally I would like to do well enough to earn a professional contract.
