The second half opened in much the same fashion, with both sides throwing in heavy challenges as the search for the opening goal ramped up.
The opening goal came just after the hour mark as Caitlin Foord showed off her athleticism to jink into the Melbourne City area before sweeping home past Lydia Williams in goals for a one nil scoreline.
The goal sparked City to life and 10 minutes later the scored were level as Jessica Fishlock headed in a deep cross from Stephanie Catley on the left flank to claw one back for the away side.
Minute later Remy Siemsen thought she’d found a winner as she prodded home off a Kyah Simon ball on the turn, however the offside flag again denied the home side.
With time ticking down both sides threatened on the break, however with no further chances the scores remained level at one all as the full time whistle sounded.
Sydney FC have the BYE next round while Melbourne City contest the Melbourne Derby on Sunday 15 January (kick off 4pm) at Epping Stadium.
