Sydney FC-s players smashed the club-s record for community visits in a month with a hugely successful June as the Sky Blues started its Community Program leading into the 2013/14 season.
The Sydney FC stars took part in 285 hours of work in the football community during the month which beats the previous best (190 hours, August 2012) by a Sydney FC team by almost 100 hours.
The Community engagement work included visiting grassroots clubs across Sydney to put on training drills, offer coaching advice to children and parents and supporting charities and local associations by signing autographs and having photos taken.
More than 60 separate Community appearances were made by the players as they started the rigorous pre-season training schedule, which included two or three sessions a day.
“It has been a fantastic effort from everyone involved in the Community department, and of course all of the players,” said Community Officer Daniel Barrett. “We-re making a concerted effort to get out among the community and engage with local people across the city.
“The players have visited club training nights where they would put on sessions with the juniors and also small sided games at weekends.
“Obviously it-s very important to the players and the club the work that we do at grassroots level.”
Players visited places from Lynwood Park and Chipping Norton in the west, to Avalon in the north and Engadine, Lilli Pilli and Wollongong in the south of Sydney.
Each team member did their bit with captain Terry McFlynn, Joel Griffiths, Blake Powell and Rhyan Grant leading the way in terms of the number of hours spent engaging with the junior players.
However, the work doesn-t stop there for the community department with a very busy month ahead.
“July will be big,” Barrett said. “We-ll start our hospital visits as well as our school holiday clinics which are kicking off, and that will culminate into our school programme, so hopefully more people can benefit from the work we do.”
