Despite Türkiye enjoying over 70 per cent possession and registering 30 shots on goal, the Socceroos’ youthful side showed tremendous resilience to keep a clean sheet and secure a famous victory in Canada.
Making his FIFA World Cup debut, Okon Jnr was one of ten Australian players experiencing the tournament for the first time and was widely praised for his contribution in midfield. Several post-match ratings had the Sydney FC man among Australia’s standout performers as the Socceroos frustrated one of Europe’s most talented young sides.
Australia doubled their advantage in the 75th minute through Connor Metcalfe, who capitalised on a defensive error before firing home to seal a memorable win for Tony Popovic’s men.
The result sees Australia begin their Group D campaign in perfect fashion ahead of a blockbuster clash with the United States later this week.
