After impressing during Sydney FC’s preseason with a number of excellent performances, Sky Blues defender Matt Jurman has revealed how well the squad is gelling ahead of Sydney FC’s first Townsville Cup match against the Northern Fury tomorrow at Townsville Sports Reserve (kick off 7:30pm).
Jurman is determined to cement a starting position ahead of the Hyundai A-League season 2014/15 kick off in October, and he said the whole squad was shaping up well under new Head Coach Graham Arnold.
“It’s always nice to get some praise [from Graham] but I’m always looking forward,” Jurman said.
“There’s a lot of games to come and I want to be playing in those games so I’ve got to keep playing well and hopefully Arnie is impressed.
“I think if you look at the squad we’ve got, we’ve got a great squad, and I think we can do really well if we play together as a team, not just our first 11 but our whole team is a great squad so looking forward to the season,” he continued.
“Everyone’s really enjoying working under Arnie which is the main thing. You want to come into work and enjoy it.
“I think he’s been good in terms of getting our structure right and defensively being a lot better at the back and as a team just press higher up the field.”
While there is still some distance between now and the start of the season, Jurman believes the club’s performances so far will give their opposition food for thought, as the stalwart defender prepares to face off against his former club, Brisbane Roar.
“From a team perspective I think we’ve been doing very well in training and in the games,” Jurman said.
“I think it’s all coming along very well, there’s a long way to go but I’m feeling very positive.
“It will be good to go up there and see the boys from my old team. It’s going to be a good nine days and all the boys are looking forward to the trip.
“I think it will be a bit similar to the New Zealand trip. All the boys were spending time together and training and playing three games will be good for us. I’m looking forward to the season.”
