Sydney FC have today officially confirmed their inaugural PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Men’s squad for the upcoming 2016 season.
The squad will compete in the state’s premier competition as the pinnacle of the Sky Blues newly launched Academy, with their first match to take place against Mounties Wanderers FC at Lambert Park, Leichhardt on Sunday 6 March (kick off 7:45pm).
Foxtel National Youth League winning Head Coach Robert Stanton will guide the squad in their inaugural season, with a number of the team having played in, and won, the Foxtel National Youth League 2015/16 title.
Former Sydney Olympic midfielder Yianni Spyrakis will guide the team as captain in their inaugural season, with the squad brimming with talent and experience on the international stage, with George Timotheou, Daniel Arzani, Daniel Maskin and goalkeepers Duro Dragicevic and Nicholas Sorras recently featuring for the Joeys, Lachlan Hughes and Charles Lokoli-Ngoy featuring for the Young Socceroos, while midfielder Max Burgess boasts Hyundai A-League experience for Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets.
Sydney FC’s PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Men’s squad will also draw on the U20’s squad, as the Sky Blues Academy embarks on their first competitive season.
Head Coach Robert Stanton said he was pleased with the squad at his disposal as he looks to produce the next batch of Hyundai A-League footballers.
“I am very pleased with the squad that I and my staff have assembled,” he said.
“There has been a gradual improvement collectively every week from the players to the point where I am confident that the playing group will compete well in NPL 2.
“Our main objective is to develop players that have the ability to play in the Hyundai A-League, and to do that they need to show that they can play senior for football consistently week in and week out.
“There lies the challenge for us as a team. The players have embraced this and are keen to show that they can do it.”
Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Tony Pignata said he held high hopes for the Sky Blues first foray into the state competition.
“I’m very much looking forward to seeing what our National Premier Leagues squad can produce this season,” Pignata said.
“A lot of these players took part in our successful Youth League campaign and I hope they can transfer that form into the state competition this winter.”
