Meet Tyler Williams: Sydney FC’s Newest Academy Graduate

Sydney FC’s future looks brighter than ever with the announcement of 16-year-old Tyler Williams signing his first professional contract with the club.

A composed and confident ball-playing centre-back, Williams is the latest product of the club’s esteemed academy, and fans can expect big things from this rising star.

16 year old Tyler Williams has been training with the Sydney FC A-League Men’s squad most of the season.

A Dream Realized

For Williams, putting pen to paper on his first professional contract is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

“It’s a special moment for myself and my family,” he said

“I’m very honored to have this opportunity to play for the best club in Australia, and I can’t wait to get started.”

The journey to this milestone was a whirlwind for the young defender.

“It all happened very quickly,” he said. “I was in training, made my debut for the AFC (Asian Champions League 2), and the next minute I got offered a scholarship. It was an incredible feeling—probably the best feeling I’ve ever had.”

Sydney FC Technical Director – Youth, Kelly Cross, reflected on Williams’ journey and the qualities that set him apart.

“When I first saw him at 12 and spoke to his parents, I was convinced Tyler wasn’t here just for a couple of years. I told them he was here for the long term,” Cross said.

“What’s always impressed me about Tyler is his calmness and composure. Nothing bothers him.

“That’s why it’s no surprise to see him step onto the field in a Champions League game at such a young age and look so comfortable.”

Support from Family and Friends

Williams’ achievement has been met with overwhelming support from his loved ones. “They were ecstatic for me,” he said with a smile.

“They were over the moon and very proud of all the hard work I’ve put in.”

Academy Roots and Rapid Rise

Williams’ journey through the Sydney FC Academy is a testament to his talent and determination.

Starting with the Under-13s, he climbed through the ranks, playing for the under 14s, 15s, and 16s before skipping parts of the 18s to join the 20s.

“I got my first start for first grade this year, played a full season, and now I’ve signed my scholarship,” he recounted.

Before joining Sydney FC, Williams developed his skills at Blacktown Spartans and Football Tech Academy, where he was part of their full-time program through the Under-11s and 12s.

Cross recalled Williams’ early days in the academy.

“I remember watching him at a primary school tournament in country New South Wales.

“It was during those games that I was convinced this boy had something special,” he said.

“From the very start, Tyler’s attitude, work ethic, and application were like that of a young pro.”

Debut Moments

Making his debut for Sydney FC was a moment Williams will never forget.

“It was a fantastic feeling to step out on the pitch for the first time, representing the best club in Australia,” he said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better club to do it with.”

Learning from the Best

Being around the A-League’s top players has been invaluable for Williams.

“They’ve been very welcoming,” he said. “Every day, I’m learning something new, and they’re always pushing me to new limits and helping me become a better player.”

One player in particular has been a guiding figure for Williams – the now departed Hayden Matthews.

“He’s been a big help,” Williams explained.

“He’s always there to guide me in sessions and support me. He’s been through it recently himself, so he understands the process and has helped me adjust really well.”

Inspiration and Ambitions

Growing up, Williams looked up to Sydney FC legend Alex Wilkinson.

“I used to watch his games when I was younger,” he said.

“His game awareness, leadership, and control of the team were always a step above. That’s something I’ve always admired and tried to emulate.”

Williams has even had the chance to pick Wilkinson’s brain since joining the first team.

“He’s been very helpful,” he said. “I’ve asked him questions about improving my game, and he’s given me great advice.”

While Sydney FC remains his number one, Williams also grew up a passionate Liverpool supporter.

“I’m a big fan,” he admitted. “I’ve always loved watching them play.”

Working hard

National Honors

Williams has already represented Australia at the international level, earning two call-ups this year with the Under-20 national team.

He participated in friendly tournaments in Indonesia and China, gaining invaluable experience on the global stage.

The Future is Bright

Looking ahead, Williams has clear ambitions.

“Over the next three years, I hope to get a lot of minutes, secure regular starts, and win trophies with the club,” he said.

Long term, he dreams of playing overseas but is focused on making his mark in the A-League first.

When asked to describe his playing style, Williams highlighted his composure on the ball, ability to play through the lines, and defensive skills.

“I’m a ball-playing centre-back,” he said. “But I can defend well in one-on-one situations too.”

Cross added: “Tyler’s not just a back-third player; he’s someone who can make things happen from the back.

“He’s comfortable, confident, and has the potential to develop into a first-team regular in the years to come.”

Williams has signed a three year contract with the club starting on July 1st.
