Mathias Macallister has made an instant impact with the Australian U23’s as he scored the winner overnight in their group opener.
The Aussies took on Thailand to open the AFC U23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia and fell behind early on with thanks to a goal from Sittha Boonlha.
Tony Vidmar’s side were dealt a lifeline back into the contest when Phon-Ek Maneekorn was shown a straight red card and from there is was all green and gold dominance.
Ethan Alagich converted a penalty midway through the first half however it would be Mathias Macallister on debut for the Olyroos who stole the show with a beautiful finish.
The teenager cut inside onto his right foot from the corner of the box and curled one into the far top corner to send his country into the lead.

The Australians held on to secure all three points and will now face China in their next Group Stage match.
