Vitezslav Lavicka has implored his side to overcome its slow starts as Sydney FC looks to bounce back to form against Brisbane Roar at Kogarah-s Jubilee Oval on Sunday.

Lavicka was speaking after watching his side go behind 2-0 against Wellington Phoenix before pulling a goal back but failing to pull off another gallant comeback.

The 2-1 loss sees Sydney FC sitting equal 3rd alongside Melbourne Victory but it is the slow starts that has Lavicka frustrated.

“We need to start the games better,” he said. “We can-t keep allowing it (teams to score first) and hope to come back into the game.

“Today again we are behind with some soft goals and then we try to score the late goals to come back.

“Next week we play Brisbane, which will be a tough opponent and we have to start better if we want a positive performance.”

Captain Terry McFlynn agreed, adding: “We have to be better, especially early on in games. Yes it is positive that we are showing character to mount these comebacks but we should be pushing for more goals later in the game instead of trying to claw our way back into the game.”

McFlynn also stated he thought Sydney FC deserved two penalties but refused to criticise the officials. “If you ask my personal opinion I think they were both penalties.” Lavicka adding: “Yes I thought there was pushing but we are not going to make excuses. The referees are part of the game and it is not our style to make excuses and complain.”

Sydney FC takes on Brisbane Roar at Kogarah-s WIN Jubilee Oval on Sunday December 4. The match kicks off at 5pm.
